CHAPULINES

CHAPULINES

Chapulines plays an idiosyncratic interpretation of son jarocho which originated in the colonial period when indigenous, Spanish, African and Arab musical traditions blended. Chapulines is also strongly inspired by rhythms and sounds from the Caribbean, including Cuba and Colombia. These influences can be heard in their own compositions, which they alternate with songs from the traditional
repertoire.

The band formed in Mexico on the beautiful lagoon of Bacalar after a musical encounter between singer and jarana player Beto Robledo Zaragoza (MX) and violinist Graciela Zaera (ES). Back in Europe, the group was completed with Antoon Kindekens (BE) on percussion and José Luis Montiel (MX) on
double bass
